Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

threatning letter

My friend is seeking custody of her grandchildren--the father of the grandchidren shot and killed their mother[aledgely]--the friend has temporary custody now and has gone to a hearing for permanent custody but the judge hasn't ruled yet--now the friend got an unmailed letter left in the mailbox telling her that she had better watch out or she would die like her daughter. The lawyer said she couldn't enter that in evidence because it was hear say. Is that true?

She already has a lawyer, so am not offering any advice to her.

Am assuming that she called the police when her life was threatened?
