Adoption of step children
Do I need to go through an attorney to adopt my step sons. The father said he would sign papers and not contest it. If so, where do I get all forms needed. Can I get them on line.
Does the father have to be present in court or can he sign and have papers notorized since he lives in a different state. If legal help is needed can I use a para legal instead of an attorney?

A paralegal cannot practice law in the State of Texas - it is illegal and the State Bar of Texas prosecutes paralegals or anyone practicing law in Texas without a law license.
You can probably get the basic paperwork at any law library.
However, I recommend an attorney. There are a bunch of little things that need to be done to do an agreed step-parent adoption. Example, it is actually two lawsuits -- one termination followed by an adoption.
A social study needs to be done. A criminal background check needs to be done.
Also, an attorney will be appointed to represent the interests of the kids.
Of course, you can always try to do it yourself.
Our office charges a deposit of $1,500 to start a termination and step-parent adoption. Then a weekly payment plan.
