Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

I want to get emancipated. Me and my parents have no emotional connection. My dad used to hit me with the belt when i got bad grades or got in trouble. Last december I got in trouble for talking to my boyfriend on the phone at 3 in the morning. When he got home he slapped and threw me to the ground. Ever since that incident it hasn't been the same. My parents are constatly putting me down. My boyfriends mom said that if i got emancipated i could move in with her, until i got a job. What steps do i need to take? And how long will the process take?

How old are you? If you are 17, you can petition the court to remove your disabilities as a minor, without your parent's consent; but you have to show that you are self-supporting and independent. Have you notified the police or a teacher about the physical abuse? You should. You could request a protective order, asking that you be placed in the home of a friend until you are 18. If nothing else, contact Legal AId for assistance.

I've addressed this on my blog.

The TX Family Code is online.

Emancipations is called REMOVAL OF DISABILITIES in Texas.

It is very specific and very limited.

After practicing law almost 20 years, I've never done one!

I almost did one last year but the young lady decided to buy a car instead.

Good luck!
