Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

My 7 year old son accidentally broke someone's car window as the car was parked in the parking lot of our apartment complex. The owners of the vehicle have demanded $300 on the spot or they will call police. I am a single mother of 3 children and my children were at my home being cared for by an adult baby sitter. Legally what am I liable for? Can they demand a certain amount of money without first showing me proof that the repairs will indeed cost $300? Do I have a right to obtain my own estimates for repair before agreeing to pay any amounts?

Rule number one: Don't let anybody bully you. Ever. Never let anyone threaten you.

Rule number two: You're responsible for the broken window, however much it costs to repair it. Suggest that you want to see at least two repair estimates, and you will pay the repair shop directly.

Rule number three: Next time someone threatens to call the police, call his bluff - call the police yourself.
