The Statutes of Frauds. There are two; one dealing with commercial matters and the other dealing with property matters.

A contract for an interest in real estate must be evidenced by a writing, as is a sale of greater than $500, or an agreement to pay the debts of another.

Contract law is one reference source with regards to contract requirements. However, depending on the facts, the source can change.

Without knowing details, you can have an oral contract but it is limited to being used under certain circumstances.
