Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

I received a court appointed attorney to represent me in a criminal trial 5 years ago that has not been brought to trial as of yet. I have met my attorney once before the arraignment. Finally, I have a court date of May 10th. Can you have a trial without any preparation whatsoever for defense? I keep him up to date on address and phone number, however, I am always told that he will call me back but he never does. I am terrified to stand trial with absolutely no representation. What recourse is available to me??? What can I do to ensure I have proper representation?

Stop using the telephone.

Write him a LETTER (a paper letter) and tell him that since you have a trial setting for May 10, you'd like to prepare for it, and ask him when you can come in and meet with him. Keep a copy of the letter.
