If gay marriage were to pass as a civil right to marry as they choose, would polygamists also have the civil right to marry as they choose ?

The difference between the two is that gay marriage is being attacked on several fronts, specifically as an outgrowth of the Lawrence v. Texas decision made by the US Supreme Court a few years ago. That case removed most of the barriers between consenting adults relating to sexual conduct.

In the case of Polygamy the issue still remains if a person or persons may take multiple spouses.

So the substantial difference is the sex of the partner and not the quantity.
