Subpoena Exceptions?

If I'm issued a subpoena to appear in small claims court and my mother passes away, before the court date, can I be held in contempt of court or spend jail time?

Re: Subpoena Exceptions?

If you're the defendant in the small claims court matter, and(after having been properly served with notice and the papers)you fail to appear at the scheduled hearing, the judge is not going to find you in contempt nor order you to jail. But, rather more likely, merely award your opponent(the plaintiff)a default judgment in the matter.
