Legal Question in Technology Law in Virginia

Are CD Burners Legal if I Want to Listen to Music that I Don't Own?

I really want a CD burner but my parents won't let me until I do some legal research on them. I know I have to specify what I am going to use the CD burner for. I am a big music freak and I like some songs by some artists but not enough to waste all of my money on one album just to listen to two or three songs on it. Even if I didn't have that CD and I wanted to listen to those two or three songs, would it be legal to burn those songs onto a mix CD that I put together myself with different artists on it? Thanks again!

The CD burner is legal, the copy you propose to make on it is illegal.
