Legal Question in Technology Law in Virginia

Using Images Taken By Self on a Commercial Website

Hello,

I am the webdeveloper of a driver's training school, and appreciate the help.

1st) The owner took some pictures himself of area highschools during a event he went to. No People are in these pictures. Can we legally display them without permission or do we need to seek permission? We were simply going to put them in a web gallery in like a area schools category, no information or anything.

2nd) Can we display pictures of students using our service, without a release? My instinct is no, but Id like to be sure. The pictures would be like a student in a car with the instructor.

Thanks,

G. Miller

Re: Using Images Taken By Self on a Commercial Website

Pictures of public buildings are fine; you should be clear that there is no implication of sponsorship or affiliation by the pictured schools.

You definitely should obtain releases from students before using their pictures; if minors, parental permission is required.
