Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Consumer Debt

I have a son living in VA who is in the middle of a job transition. His former job paid commission only. After losing that job his ability to pay his due bills (rent, auto, furniture, misc) was severley hindered. He's since found a new job however he's already 1 payment behind on most of his bills (- Rent & Auto, their current thanks to Mom and Dad). I advised him to contact all of his creditors and let them know what's going on and what actions he planned to take to rememdy the situation. I went over his income forecast and it appears that he will be OK in about 45 days. Some of the creditors however are threatening to take legal action that would include going to court. If he's communicating with them and making partial payments to show good faith, should he be concerned about what the creditors are threatening to do? How much pain could they inflict on a 20 year old who is 30 days late on a few bills?

Re: Consumer Debt

As long as he's communicated with each of the creditors which he's behind with, and he, subsequently, follows through on his promises, your son should not have a problem.

These creditors are unlikely to initiate legal actions against your son which, could, conceivably, put all of their future payments in jeopardy, unless they have no other alternative.
