Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

I am currently living in VA recently moved here in 2008, purchased a home in 2004 No information of a past open ending card account was on my credit report. This has to have been more than 20 years ago if it is true. What about the statues of limitation and how can I stop them from calling. Who is to say that anyone can call you and say you have an outstanding bill from 1972?
