Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Master's reimbursement to school district

I have left a school district where they paid for me to obtain my graduate degree. The contract I signed stated that I would be responsible for paying this back if I left before serving my five years. However, the contract I signed did not stipulate how long I would have to repay this money and now they are telling me that I have 3 years to pay it back ($500 a month.) They can't force me into something like this after the fact, right? This is something that should have been specified in the contract I signed, I would think. If I make a concerted effort to pay them back can they do anything to me?

Re: Master's reimbursement to school district

No, material terms cannot be added to a contract after the fact by either party. However, it would be far preferable for you to come to an agreement with the school district regarding a schedule of reimbursement rather than having to spend time in court litigating the matter.
