Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

employment with law enforcement having a criminal record

I am a 25 year old women. I am studying and taking courses on criminal justice with the hopes of entering into the area of criminal justice. The only problem is that I have a criminal background. I have been in trouble for getting into fights so you could I have a violent assault record. Most of my charges have recieved deffered finding by the courts but some have not. I am not on probation and have not been in trouble since 2003. Most of my issues were behind alcohol and I have also been sober since 2003. I want to give back to my community what I once took away. I would think that with my knowledge, life experience and school education that I would be able to provide insight into juvenile behavior and domestic abuse related to alcohol. What are the chances of me being able to pursue my career path? I really feel like I have a lot to offer and I want to know now whether I should change my career focus. Please help.

Re: employment with law enforcement having a criminal record

If your convictions are misdemeanors, you should consider the possibility of having them expunged. (See Va. Code Sec. 19.2-392.2(F).) A larger metropolitan law enforcement agency might be more sympathetic to an application for such a position from someone with your type of background rather than a smaller, more rural police or Sheriff's Department.
