Judges Ruling

When a judge makes a ruling in a civil case (in my case, child custody) with stipulations of who can be around the children, when does the ruling go into affect? Is it effective immediately when the judge states his/her instructions? or does it have to actually be filed with the court?

Usually when the order encompassing the various issues and the ruling is signed by the judge.
