Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Medical decisions by stepparent

I have full legal custody of my son whose birth father ran years ago. I am now married and I need to know what to do so that, should the event arise, my husband can make medical and legal decisions for him. Thank You.

If the biological father "ran years ago", as you say, why should you now have any concern that he may suddenly appear on the scene anytime soon announcing concerns for a son which he apparently abandoned years ago?

However, to allay any concerns regarding such an unlikely apparition which you apparently now have, your current husband could initiate an action to adopt your son which would necessarily terminate the parental rights and all claims which the biological father might raise in regard to this child at some future time----however, unlikely this prospect may in reality be.
