Re: Temporary Child Custody

Custody to your father.

The first discussion you need to have with a lawyer is WHETHER to trasfer custody to your father. The insurance needs are all well and good but you must realize once you give custody to someone else the only was to get it back is to re-petition the court and win it back. Not always easy. People (even blood relations) change. You need to think seriously about that.

Otherwise your father files a petition for custody in the juvenile and domestic relations court where the child lives and he would have to serve both mother and father to appear before the court. You can come in agreement to award custody to your parent and the child's father's position would also be heard.

Consider the father might make a play for the child once you admit you can't have it yourself (I don't know a thing about him) and whoever has custody of your child (even your father) can petition the court to get child support from either or both parents.

Be careful and good luck.
