Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

Break-ups and money

My ex girlfriend claims that I owe her 10,000+ and that i am responsible to pay her debts. I did file her as my dependent on my taxes for 07, but none of her bills are in my name nor are any of her debts, what are my legal responsibilities regarding her debts.

Not sure why/how she was a dependent or why she claims you owe her, but you would not be responsible for her debts, assuming you have no valid contract with her and assuming this is not a joint debt, where you were co-signer, etc. That the bills are in her name helps too.

I agree with Cary. I am not sure you should have claimed her as a dependent, but I am not a tax expert. I'd have to check.

You have not told us WHY she thinks you owe her $10,000. This sounds like she is claiming some kind of a loan. We would need to know what is the reason she thinks you owe her the money. Is it a loan? For what reason?
