Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Heat not working

Hello, I'm currently renting a townhouse & the heating unit is not working. My family & I have been incovenienced by the same. For each day that we had to stay with friends I plan to deduct a day's rent, am I within my legal rights?

Thank you.

Re: Heat not working

No, probably not, but you might want to consider

asserting an escrow account for these rents at the clerk's office of the general district court

in the locality where the property is located.

You could then continue to deposit your rents in this escrow account until the problem is remedied

and until either the landlord and you can come to an agreement as to how the escrow rents should be disposed of or if no agreement can be reached then a decision by the court as to the disposition of these funds.
