Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Landlord/Crime issues

Is there any way I can get out of my lease without paying thousands of dollars? Do I have a case at all? I was the victim of a break in, my daughter and I no longer feel safe. We have had a driveby recently as well. ON top of all that the management told me I could get out with 2 mths rent and then 3 months later said they never said that. I have had to call the cops numerous times on different neighbors and the apt manager doesn't want to do anything about it. We have rotting wood and possibly mold in my apt which has been reported many times and nothing has been done about it in 4 months. My daughter and I can't sleep and we are scared to death to live there. Is there anything I can do or anyone I can call to get help with this?

Re: Landlord/Crime issues

If you have unhealthful conditions within your unit or inside the apartment building in general, you could certainly report those to your local health department.

Unfortunately, however, from your description of matters, I do not see a basis in the facts which you've recounted for a viable claim to what the law calls a constructive eviction which is what would be legally required to allow you to terminate the lease prematurely and without legal repercussions.
