Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

Privacy of Tenants

What are the laws concerning the privacy of tenants in 2 areas? First, barring an emergency, do landlords need to provide 24 hours notice to enter a property? Second, are there any laws protecting the financial information of a tenant provided on a rental application?

Re: Privacy of Tenants

Yes, if your lease is covered by the Virginia Residential Landlord Tenant Act(VRLTA), the landlord must provide 24 hours advance notice to the tenant to enter the rental unit, unless it's an emergency. See Va. Code Sec. 55-248.18.

Landlords are also prohibited from sharing confidential tenant information with third parties under Va. Code Sec. 55-248.09:1 unless one or more of the 10 excepions listed under subsection A happens to apply.
