Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Virginia

rent to own lease

My boyfriend's mother and father signed a rent to own home lease in Virginia in 1991. It was a 5 year lease stating after the 5 years the total of the $325 monthly payments could be applied to $58,000 sale price of the house. Well, in June of 1996, the daughter of the lessors left a letter stating she was taking over the property and doing some renovations and this letter served as a certified eviction and lessee would need to vacate the property by July 31, 1996. Well my boyfriend's mother had died in '95 and his father could not find the lease. By this time in his life his Dad had given up on fighting battles; so he ended up leaving the house a broken man. Anyway, this past October my boyfriend's father died and we were going through all of his paperwork and actually found the original lease and the eviction letter from the lessor's daughter. My guess is it is too late to do anything but I wanted to know what you thought. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
