Legal Question in Military Law in Virginia

Reinlistment after medical discharge

I was given given a personality disorder diagnosis and discharged from the USCG after a suicide attempt. I was depressed and made a stupid mistake, but I don't have a personality disorder. It's two years later and I am considering re-enlisting, my re-entry code is RE-3G. I'm trying to decide if I should pursue this or is it unlikely that I will recieve a medical waiver. My question is, if I am denied a waiver for the Coast Guard is it possible to go into another branch of the military and transfer back to the Coast Guard a few years down the road?

Re: Reinlistment after medical discharge

Why not ask a USCG recruiting officer?

Re: Reinlistment after medical discharge

Yes, it is possible, but chances are if the USCG rejects you once, they will not reconsider, even if you are accepted by another service. You should check with all branches to see if you meet the medical requirements of any of them. Interservice transfers are difficult to get approved, because both services have to agree. One that has recently enlisted you will not readily agreee to let you go. It may be that your PD discharge won't pass muster for any service, unless you are able to demonstrate that due to treatment received in the meantime, it will never again surface. That will require lots of medical documentation and letters from doctors.

Best of luck
