Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Virginia

Out-sourcing cost of laundry

I am renting a townhome and the washing machine in not working. We called the property manager who then had a repair man come out to fix the unit. His parts were broken as well and had to order parts. It's been two weeks and I have not been able to wash clothes at home. It may take another 2 weeks as well. I have 2 kids and 2 adults including my self living in the home for whom I have to do laundry. Therefore I have been taking it to a laundro-mat. It has put a huge dent on our bills! Is the landlord responsible for the cost of this? Can I have them remburse me for the money I spend on out-sourcing my laundry?

Re: Out-sourcing cost of laundry

The landlord is responsible only if there's a

provision in your rental or lease agreement that

makes them so.

In the absence of such provision, you might want to consider asking for a rent abatement in an

amount equal to the extra expenditures you have incurred for the laundry.(As the old sayin' goes, them that don't ask, don't get!)
