Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

Older dependents

My brother (60) who is 8 years older then I is now my dependent and is living with me and my family. He is our dependent on our taxes. He has no job. Question-as a listed dependent on our taxes are we responable for his debt, civil problems, lawsuits or traffic accidents bill...? Thank you

Re: Older dependents

No, his debts are his issues, not yours. You do not take them on by virtue of caring for your brother.

You might want to consider setting up a guardianship for him, or at the very minimum having a durable power or attorney written (presuming he's competent to sign one.) That could save a world of heartache down the road for your family.

Hope this helps. Powell
