Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Washington

Month to month rental

I recently received a request from my apartment manager to come in and either sign a lease for 6 months or more or sign a contract for a month to month. I've been a month to move for since my original lease went up over two years ago. I was told when I originally went to a month to month I wasn't required to sign anything. Should I sign something or just avoid her and hope she doesn't try to evict me?

Re: Month to month rental

Whatever you do, do not avoid your landlord. Always maintain communications, since a good many relationships have soured for lack of communication.

That said, I am not sure why your landlord wants you to sign something that reiterates your current month to month status. I'd have to see the papers to tell you whether that's a bad idea.

On the other hand, if you know that you are going to stay for a while, why not sign a 6 month or longer lease?
