If a cosinger is required to approve and application, does the person have to be a direct family member or realative? Or can anyone with good credit that is willing to take that responsibility cosign?

It depends upon the requirements of the lender. Usually speaking, however, a co-signer does not have to be a family member, just someone who is willing to put their credit and financial stability on the line for you on your promise that you will not default on the loan.
