Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Washington

I am helping an individual in washington state for his wife recently passed away and he is essentially looking for a deed on his home to represent only his name, as he is the only individual alive. I am confused if he needs to go through probate court or if it is as simple as presenting a death certificate and other documents to show proof of some kind. Thanks
