Is an engagement ring considered a gift by law?

Generally speaking yes it is a gift. I have to admit I have never actually seen a case involving an engagement ring litigated, but while in law school we discussed whether getting engaged was actually a contract. So, if the person who received the ring is the one who broke off the wedding (breached the contract) then perhaps you have a claim to have the ring (consideration) returned.

But, usually when you give someone something it is considered a gift, and it would be, in my estimation, difficult to get an engagement ring back. (Not to mention messy and chalk full of personal information if it ever was actually litigated.)
