if we put earnest money on a house and decided not to buy after the inspection do we get that back?

If your Offer to Purchase was drafted making the inspection a contingency, and so long as you give timely notice as required by the contract of the failure of that contingeny, you should get your money back. Just be sure you follow everything you need to do under the contract so you are not in breach.
