Re: lives in another state

It does not matter where you got married.

You do not need to go back to the state where you got married

.

This is a common misperception that is completely wrong.

You file for divorce with a state that has jurisdiction. How you determine the state with jurisdiction is usually easy but, at times, can be very complicated.

Sometimes jurisdiction is the state you have lived in for 6 months and the county you have lived in for a minimum of 3 months. However, each state's time limit is determined by their legislature. When you have parties in 2 different states and minor children, jurisdiction gets more complicated.

If you live around Harris County, Texas, I offer a free phone consultation at 713-847-6000.

Best of luck!
