Legal Question in Employment Law in Alaska

Non-disclosure agreement

My employer has forbidden the employees from discussing personal wages. In other words, we are not allowed to reveal to each other how much we earn. Not that I'm itching to reveal my wage, but is this legal?

Re: Non-disclosure agreement

Itching?? Hmm.

Anyway, if your employment is "at will" you can be hired or fired for any reason, so you take your chances.

On the other hand, if there's really an "itch," then maybe you're one one to tactfully ask the boss about openness in the workplace issues and not specifically about pay, but about improving the workplace. Set up a suggestion box and make that one of several suggestions and see what happens.

But, remember that if you choose to scratch your itch and the boss fires you, you've got an uphill to impossible battle with respect to job protection.

Re: Non-disclosure agreement

Do you have a written employment contract? How about a written policy (employee manual etc.) concerning this? Unless you have a guaranteed contract of employment, you can be fired for breaking policies of your employer. THere is no guaranty of employment. There may be a 1st Amendment issue here but I believe the employer would win this one.
