Legal Question in Business Law in Arizona

Defamation of ex-employee

I recently stopped consulting for a company and gave them a 2 week notice. We had an exclusive consulting agreement where I was not supposed to take on other clients. I then resigned from that company and gave a 2 week notice. The owner tried to counter-offer me and make me stay but I did not. I then started consulting for a supplier(who I brought to them to provide products). He then called the owner of the company and told them that he was going to fire me anyway, and that he reduced my salary because I was getting paid too much, etc.

Is this legal for him to do?

Re: Defamation of ex-employee

Hi,

Unless the statements that he provided your new employer are true, your former employer is probably guilty of, at a minimum, defamation. There are other potential causes of action that my be involved as well including tortious interference with contract. If you would like to discuss this matter in more detail, please feel free to contact me at my office.
