Many court appointed attorneys are very experienced and competent attorneys. But, if you happen to get one who is not, it could be difficult to change attorneys. The case law says all defendants are entitled to an attorney - not an attorney of their choice. If you hire an attornery, you can always fire her/him if you are unhappy with the representation.
