Legal Question in Banking Law in Arkansas

altered check signature

I wrote my husband's exwife a personal check for a set of their son's school pictures. She had already paid for the pictures, so I wrote her a personal check. When the cancelled check came back to me, she had altered my signature. Is that illegal? Did she commit a crime by doing that? She changed the spelling of my last name to something that wasn't very nice. It's been one thing after another with her. Let me know if it is illegal and what I can do about it please.

Thanks,

Re: altered check signature

No, a person may not materially alter and/or pass on any legally relevant part of a writing, i.e. a personal check, or that person can be criminally charged with forgery and/or uttering. Further, if any monetary damages were suffered by the victim, then the culprit could also be liable in civil court as well.
