I need more time-How do I get it?

I am the defendant in a lawsuit set for may 27th,2004. I have no lawyer at present. How do I petition the court for an extension of time in order to obtain legal consul?

You can petition the court, meaning file for an extension with the judge. This can be done at the time of the hearing, though it is not guaranteed to be granted, especially if the attorney for the other side objects. If you do this, I would call the court, possibly the case coordinator and let them know you are asking for this.

You could hire an attorney now and have him petition the court. Some times attorneys can call the attorney for the other side and/or the court ahead of time to request the continuance and it may be done as a routine matter.

What court are you in? Who is the judge?
