Marriage and Bankruptcy

Is it necessary for a couple to be married in order to file bankruptcy together if they don't have any debts with both their names on them?

The only exception to the rule that each person or entity must file his/her/its own separate petition is that a married couple may file a joint petition. Unmarried couples must file separately.
