Covenant not to compete

I signed a covenant not compete.Can I work for the

U S Goverment in the area I singed not compete?

It is not an easy yes or no question. California is very restrictive regarding covenants not to compete. If it is an otherwise valid covenant not to compete, and if it covers working for the U.S. government, I know of no law granting an exception to working for the U.S. government. I would need to review your agreement and consult with you to answer your question further.

With very few exceptions, a covenant not compete is illegal in California and will not be enforced by the courts. See CALIFORNIA BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONS CODE section 16600. It stAtes in full:

Except as provided in this chapter, every contract by which

anyone is restrained from engaging in a lawful profession, trade, or

business of any kind is to that extent void.
