Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

Last week after school on the sidewalk next to school I was waiting for my firend to stop a fight between her sister and another girl. This girl she was fighting was with the football team and once they came to the sidewalk my friends sister had been yelling at them and yelled out at a guy that was spreading rumors about her. Her boyfriend who was standing behind me wanted to fight him. So he wanted to make sure it was him so he asked me and I denyed knowing who he was twice and then said yes it was him. I did that out of self defense because the guy was very angry and really ready to fight so I didn't want him to hurt me so I told him with the hopes of the football team not letting anything happen. As the guy who was being approached by the angry boyfriend he began to walk onto capmus to get away from him.He fought him until he was on the ground within 30 seconds. I was told by my dean today I will be put on a behavior contract for "Instigating a fight" am I guilty of anything?
