Legal Question in Technology Law in California

privacy issue with online dating sites

If police suspected that a murderer was trolling an online dating site for potential victims, how much information could they legally get access to?.

What is the owner of the online site legal obligation to his clients in terms of protecting their privacy?

Re: privacy issue with online dating sites

The owner doesn't have 'clients' like a professional, he has 'customers'. He WILL cooperate and provide everything the warrant or court order specifies, unless he goes to court and gets it changed. Without such warrant or court order, he is not required to disclose anything, but common sense should be the order of the day. The court paperwork may detail what disclosure, if any, is required or allowed to the target. There are also privacy laws concerning personal information that may apply. If you are in this position, you would be well advised to hire counsel. You really don't want to do anything to generate an 'obstruction of justice' or 'contempt of court' charge against you. IF you are in SoCal courts, and are serious about getting proper counsel, feel free to contact me.
