use of sports team and player names

Is it okay to use the names of real sports teams and players in an online game that charges people to play? If not, what are the restrictions on use?

No, commercial exploitation of a person's image without their approval is an invasion of their economic and privacy rights and a suit for damages could result. Similarly, the name of a team is a trademark and the owners thereof would probably sue for damages based upon trademark infringement.
