Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Computer store lost laptop

I dropped off my year old $1500 dollar laptop at a computer store that is not too well known. I got a receipt for it that stated the problem date, how much due ($180- already gave $20 down), and my signature and they said they were sure they could fix it. (Receipt was a copy, they kept the original) After a week or so they called and said they can't fix it and we could pick it up anytime. We called and wanted to pick it up and they said they lost the paperwork so we faxed it to them and they said they had lost the laptop. It has been 5 weeks and i was wondering if we can pursue legal actions to get compensation for the laptop. Thank you!

Yes, but what was it worth if it couldn't be repaired? Write them a letter making a monetary demand. Send it by certified, return receipt mail, and keep a copy. If they don't respond, then you can go to small claims court, and bring advertisements showing the price for a similar computer.
