Legal Question in Consumer Law in California

Can I stop them from continuing to try and charge for an accnt I closed

I signed a contract with a gym. I tried to cancel last year after writing a letter I was advised that I had signed till Jan of 2001. Taking it as a loss I allowed the gym to continue to charge my accnt monthly even though I never attended the gym. Then in Jan I closed the bank accnt that the gym automatically deducted a monthly fee from.

I received a phone call from the company stating they couldnt that there was insufficient funds on accnt. I advised I had closed that accnt and that is why. I contacted my bank to find out they in fact had not processed it. They of course immediatly did so. I was also told by the gym that after my date of Jan 2001 came my accnt did not in fact expire as I had thought but that it went on a month to month basis and to follow the steps on the contract. I did so sending a certified letter requesting closure. Now I received another call today advising that they cant get money from the accnt. Can they keep doing this? Please help, getting frustrated.
