Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I currently have around $40k of unsecured credit card debt. I am trying to do the right thing and pay them off.

I just wanted to know in the event I cannot pay it off at all, what would happen besides my credit score being hurt? I know in the event I cannot pay off secured debt like a mortgage they can take my house away, however any consequences for unsecured credit card debt besides my credit getting trashed?

thank you in advance for your time.

There are consequences. Creditors don't necessarily break arms and legs, but in the regular course of business they will harass you, your family, and employer, serve you with a summons, garnish your wages, levy your bank account, record liens on your property. It's not personal; they want their money. The consumer wants to pay it back (which requires paying it back and then some--once interest and penalties are factored in), but the consumer also owes it to herself to protect herself and her family.
