Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Acquaintance borrowed $1k 11 years ago

An acquaintance borrowed $1k 11 years ago to get her car repaired. She promised to pay it back the following month so we cut her a money order. She didn't pay it and we never heard from her again. A recent web search turned up a place of employment and an email address. I don't think we ever got anything in writing from her.

If we don't have a promise to repay in writing, can we still take her to small claims court?
