Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Bankruptcy and Fraud

I paid someone through an EBay transaction $1800 for a laptop computer. He never came through and lied to me several times about it coming soon and then he informed me that he had declared bankruptcy. He asked me not to file a claim against him in bankruptcy court and that he would pay me $500 the next day and $100 per week until paid off. I received a total of $700 but I have not received a payment in weeks. He has emailed me several more times promising that he is sending money the next day or the day before but he has not. Now I learn that it is too late for me to file a claim against him in his bankruptcy case. Is there any other action that I can take?
