Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

california treble damages

Is it legal to add treble damages to an amount and then put that on your credit report without going to court first. Just wondering because I would think that you would have to go to court before you can collect treble damages on a check. Please let me know.

Re: california treble damages

It is not proper to add treble damages on a credit report. You should dispute the amount to the credit reporting services. If they do not remove the excess amount in 30 days, you may have a claim under the FCRA.
