Cancellation of wedding

We had to cancel our wedding due to my fiances father being hospitalized and now the country club wants to collect to amount. It has been sent to collections and they want to take legal matters. Isn't there a loop hole if there was a family emergancy?? We seriously thought he was going to die. They already kept the 3000 dollar deposit, which I understand. Really need some good advice and possibly a lawyer.

I would have to take a look at your contract to know what the terms for cancellation are. If there are none, then a reasonable time might be implied. How long before the wedding did this happen? Also, were they able to book another wedding or event on the same date? Did they try?
