You can send them a letter telling them that the person died and, if true, that the estate had no assets.

Its not your problem if its not your debt. Tell them that and to stop calling and bothering you. If they continue to give you any grief then suggest that their conduct violates both the state and federal fair debt collection practices acts. The California version is commonly called the Rosenthal Act.

However you should write the collection lawyer/company and tell them that. They will want to see the death certificate so make sure you have one.
