Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

The handler won't return my dog until I pay him.

I have a show dog, and he is shown by a professional handler. I recently had some financial difficulties and couldn't pay the handler immediately. He has my dog and refuses to give the dog back until I pay him. I know it is not legal for him to keep the dog, but I don't know how to make the handler give my dog back. What should I do?

from the facts given so far, you may be able to file a criminal charge for embezzlement or larceny by conversion since the handler was in "rightful possession" of your show dog but now refuses to return the dog to you without prompt payment for services rendered. you may also have standing for civil remedies known as detinue and/or injunctive relief to compel thru court order return of your show dog as well. if you would like further legal assistance and/or representation in this matter, email my Law Firm today with more details, especially in respect to the dog's market value and how much you owe this trainer for services rendered.

There is a Professional handlers association striving to raise the standards of that profession. They are the Professional Handlers Association, their phone number is (301) 924-0089. If he is a member they will exert great pressure on him to return you dog. There is also the National Pet Owners Association, and of course for pure breds, the National Kennel Club. Your handler will more than likely wish to remian in the good sted of those organizations, and may even be barred by them, if he does not return you dog immediately. Good luck!
